Today is End The R Word Day.

Some of you may be wondering WHAT the R word is.

Let me tell you.  The R Word is Retard.

This word may mean nothing to you.  You may use it without even realizing you are using it.  But let me explain something to you.

This word HURTS.  It OFFENDS.  It STINGS. 

When you direct it at my daughter, it hurts.  When you direct it at ANY individual with a disability, it hurts.  When you say it in general, with no target in mind, it hurts.

It hurts the individual who has dealt with being differently abled, such as my daughter.

It hurts the mother who's child is differently abled. 

It hurts anyone who knows, loves or has met someone who is differently abled.

The word "retard" does not mean silly.  It does not mean stupid.  It does not mean dorky.

The word retard has no place in the English language.  It is outdated and has no use in our language.

By not using this word, you help us win the battle.

By choosing to use it, you cause hurt to people and those they love.
