The idea of Family My Way came to me in the middle of the night a few days after hearing a questionable rant by a national politician.  I had just finished creating the final pieces of a baby keepsake book for alternative families that took more than 3 years to create. One of the domain names I purchased for the sale of that book was familyyourway.com. While asleep I realized that Family My Way sounded better and was perhaps more fitting.  From there the idea took off.  I envisioned a community for all types of families to gather and exchange ideas and build friendships.  Gay, straight, black, white or purple I envisioned a place where everyone was welcome.  I immediately jumped out of bed to check website domain names and see if anything like what I was envisioning was already in existence.  Much to my surprise, I found nothing quite like it and began registering domains and making contacts to make my “dream” become a reality.

My partner is not only an amazing teacher and partner but a wonderfully supportive person.  She's been a special needs educator in 3 different counties in 2 different states for more than 9 years. We've been together for more than 9 years and have an adorable son.  Our son has a Mom and a Mia as well as the supporting roles of grandparents known as Shuga, Pata, E and Coach.  Additionally, he has 2 uncles and 4 aunts.  Together we create our family; the way that we want it to be.  Obviously, our version of family is not considered the most “traditional” or “normal” American family but whose family is in today’s society? That is the concept that “Family My Way” wants to portray; that you and those that you love develop the family that YOU want to be a part of.

You’ll notice blog entries periodically where we touch on issues involving today’s family.  The blog entries won’t always be written from one point of view about one type of family.  Since Family My Way is about all different families, we plan to have guest bloggers writing about topics that they know.

Beyond the blog we’ll be posting news articles from around the world that might be of interest.  Feel free to comment on those, or the blog. 

As an additional way to connect, we’ve created an online community that you’ll find under the Community menu.  Sign up, create a profile and start connecting with others.  There’s a spot for you to create your own blog and upload and share pictures with your connections.  There’s also a wall for your connections to leave messages for you. 

 We invite you to come and be a part of our community, network with friends and other families as a form of support, and/or friendship.  Be proud of your family, whoever and whatever it consists of.
